Benefits of black tea

Most of us consume tea daily. But do you know that black tea is more powerful than tea containing milk? I read this in newspaper "Punjab Kesari" dated Friday, 23rd March, 2012. Here is the translation of the passage in English:

Specialists say that consumption of black tea for 3 or more than 3 times a day, helps in preventing heart problems. Daily consumption of black tea also prevents a person from type-2 diabetes. It has been proved from a review that, taking tea with or without milk, helps in reducing heart problems. With this, the level of bad cholesterol and blood sugar can be minimized in the body.

Experts say that the benefits of tea mostly comes from the flavonoids contained in it. Due to the presence of anti-oxidant items in tea, cardiovascular diseases can be avoided. Overall, due to the presence of flavonoids, swelling, blood-clotting are minimized, and there is an increase in the working capacity of blood vessels. Besides this, in an experiment of 12 weeks, about 87 volunteers found that the consumption of 3 cups of tea per day helps in preventing cardiovascular diseases. Nutritionist Dr. Carrie Ruxton, who is a member of T.A.P.(Tea Advisory Panel) says, "We get a lot of benefits from the anti-oxidant flavonoids contained in the black tee, especially in case of heart. However, it has been found from recent studies that flavonoids do their work only when we don't pour milk into it".

So, enjoy your healthy habit of consuming black tea! Happy reading :):):)

  1. Flavonoids are compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages (tea, coffee) that have diverse beneficial biochemical and antioxidant effects. Their dietary intake is quite high compared to other dietary antioxidants like vitamins C and E. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids depends on their molecular structure. 1. Mostly, the intake of beverages like black tea and black coffee provide similar benefits such as
      1. They contain antioxidants – molecules that protect the body from harmful free radicals,
      2. Help prevent some forms of diabetes
      3. Drinking no more than two cups of black coffee a day speeds up the metabolism to burn calories, much like black tea.
